12U Gold Coach

I have played and coached volleyball for the past 30 years.  I have a true passion for the game and love to teach that passion to the players that I coach.  This is my third season coaching for the Willamette Valley Volleyball Club.  During my first two years of coaching for Willamette Valley my U14 team moved up approximately 40 spots (CEVA rankings) the first year and 30 the second year.  We won Regionals for our division both years.  I have coached at the high school level, coaching junior varsity and assisting with varsity at Newberg High School and Gaston High School.  I have also spent many years coaching in youth volleyball programs (grades 4th through 8th) at Hazelbrook Middle School in Tigard, Mt View Middle School in Newberg, and for the past five years I have coached and am on the board for the Sherwood Youth Volleyball organization.

I am married and have three girls who have all discovered the same passion for volleyball that I have.  All three are playing at the club level so I understand the challenges that the athletes face from a personal perspective.  I believe having kids of my own in the same situation as my players makes me a more compassionate coach.

I believe that you teach kids the proper way to play right from the beginning.  Having coached players as young as nine years old, my philosophy is to teach overhand serving, work on getting three hits per side and utilize a setter right from the beginning.  I firmly believe that 12 year olds are capable of running the same basic offense/defense that the high schools run.  I love to take a group of players help them gel as a team, challenge them to reach their potential and see how far each player as well as the team can develop both mentally and physically in a season.  I believe in working hard and that working hard can also be fun!

I feel as their coach it is my responsiblity to help them grow not only as players but also as people.  They will show respect to their teammates, coaches, parents, other teams, referees as well as for themselves.  There is no better opportunity than sports for kids to learn the lessons that go with success, failure, hard work, and never giving up.  I truly love to teach the sport that I love, help players develop in their abilities, learn to play as a team and help them grow as individuals.
